On 9 September 2026, I made a full day of Cologne on foot. I started at Köln Hauptbahnhof, wandered through the Old Town, spent a while at the Chocolate Museum, crossed the Hohenzollern Bridge to the KölnTriangle, then went on to a KD cruise. After the boat, I followed the river south to the Kranhäuser and Harry-Blum-Platz.
This follows the places I visited in order, rather than the shortest possible sightseeing loop. Allow time for the attractions, food stops and the tower climb as well as the walking.
About the route estimates: The distances and times below are rounded planning estimates, not measured distances or a record of my exact footsteps. The two legs involving the cruise assume an Old Town pier and a return across Hohenzollern Bridge. My exact boarding and disembarkation points have not been confirmed, so follow your KD ticket and the operator’s notices for those legs. No exact cruise boarding point is plotted here.
Walking route map
Schematic map, not to scale. Cruise boarding points are approximate; follow your ticket for the confirmed pier.

The stops
1. Start: Köln Hauptbahnhof
I arrived by train at Köln Hauptbahnhof and the Cathedral is right beside the station, so it is an easy place to begin. Get your bearings outside before deciding how much of the Cathedral you want to do: the interior, Treasury and tower are separate experiences and take time.
2. Cologne Cathedral, Treasury and tower
I started with the Cathedral and its Treasury. Coming out of the station and finding the Cathedral right there is a brilliant way to start a city visit. If you are adding the tower, be ready for a proper climb: the official Cathedral information says the viewing platform is reached by 533 steps, with no lift. It was tiring, but absolutely worth it for the view.
The tower entrance is on the south side, by Roncalliplatz. Check the official visitor and ticket pages for the interior, Treasury and tower before you go, as access arrangements and hours can change.

3. Heinzelmännchenbrunnen
From the Cathedral, head to Am Hof and the Heinzelmännchenbrunnen, beside Früh am Dom. It is a short detour and a lovely little bit of Cologne folklore carved into a fountain. I stopped here on the way towards 4711.
4. 4711 Fragrance House
Continue west to the Fragrance House at Glockengasse 4. The historic building is an easy landmark to spot; inside, it is a shop and fragrance experience. Personally, I didn’t think the visit was worth making a special trip for, but if you’re interested in the brand or its history, it is an easy stop to fit into this walk. Check the official 4711 page for current opening hours and any tours or events.
5. Alter Markt
Walk back east into the Old Town to Alter Markt. It is a good place to pause, look around and get a feel for the lanes and squares before the food stop.
6. Rievkoochebud, Salzgasse
From Alter Markt, take the short walk to Rievkoochebud, Salzgasse 6. This was my potato-pancake stop before heading down to the river. It is a takeaway place, so be prepared to eat outside or keep walking. Opening days can matter: check ahead if you are planning your day around it.
7. Chocolate Museum
From Salzgasse, head south along the riverfront to the Chocolate Museum. I thought the museum was great, and the waffles were unreal. Give yourself time here: it is much more than a quick photo stop, and it makes a good break before the longer river-and-bridge section.
The museum is at Am Schokoladenmuseum 1a. Check its official site for opening hours on your date and advance booking.

8. Walk back to Hohenzollern Bridge and cross to KölnTriangle
After the museum, walk north along the Rhine promenade towards Hohenzollern Bridge, then cross to the Deutz side and continue to the KölnTriangle entrance at Ottoplatz 1. The bridge’s pedestrian path gives you a relaxing riverside stretch in good weather, with the Cathedral and river views opening up as you go.
I used my NDC for the KölnTriangle visit. That was my personal experience on the day, not a promise about the current policy: please verify the observation deck’s current disability admission and documentation rules directly with the venue before visiting. The deck can close in storms or thunderstorms, so it is sensible to check conditions too.

9. KD river cruise aboard MS RheinVision
After the KölnTriangle, I took a KD river cruise aboard MS RheinVision. The boat trip gave me a change of pace after all the walking and climbing.
KD’s official fleet page confirms MS RheinVision as one of its vessels. That supports the ship identification; it does not establish which pier I used on 9 September. My exact boarding and disembarkation points are still unconfirmed.
For planning, the distance table uses an Old Town pier and a walk back over Hohenzollern Bridge. Treat that as a suggested connection, rather than a confirmed account of my footsteps. Check your own departure time, ship and exact landing stage with KD, and adjust the walk to suit your booking.

10. Kranhäuser
After the cruise, I made my way to the Kranhäuser, the striking crane-shaped buildings in Rheinauhafen. They are especially good to see from the promenade, where you can take in the whole group rather than just looking up from beneath them.
11. Finish at Harry-Blum-Platz
My final stop was Harry-Blum-Platz, home to Cologne’s seasonal outdoor cinema. It made a lovely finish to the walk. If you want to watch a film, check the programme, language and season dates first; reaching the square does not mean there will be a screening that evening.

A few practical things I’d keep in mind
- Allow a full day. The suggested walking route is roughly 7.6 km, before the time spent in the Cathedral, museum and observation deck; the cruise piers may change the total.
- Check opening days. In particular, check the Rievkoochebud, Cathedral visitor access, museum and cinema programme for your date.
- Leave energy for the tower. Those 533 steps are no small thing; I found the climb tiring, but the view made it worthwhile.
- Check KD’s exact pier. KD publishes the Cologne landing stages and notes that the day’s ship deployment can affect where you board. Follow your ticket and current notices.
- Use a map app for the day itself. The distances here are rounded estimates. Temporary closures, market stalls and crowds may change the easiest pedestrian route.
